Adding Watermarks to PeopleSoft fields

Interesting thing to do!!

The PeopleSoft Tipster Blog

The Cedar tech team has recently discovered a great tweak to improve the end-user experience in PeopleSoft.

Many well designed websites use Watermark text to provide a visual hint to the user what they should put into a field. We felt that PS Self Service users would appreciate the enhancement.

Yell Yellow – you get Taxi for Sure

For the last one month, there has been an intense campaign to attract more customers to TaxiforSure.com. The company gave a promotional offer to use the coupon code APP50 – that gives instant 50/- discount on your trip. Wherever you saw yellow this month, high chances were that it was TaxiforSure – such was the impact of the campaign. Looking at the reception the promotion has got, this should have been a grand success for the company.

Personally I used TaxiforSure 4 times this month. Every time I wanted a ride, I did not have to remember the number I needed to call and wait for an attendant to explain the details (nowadays its tricky to get a cab so easily). All happened in few taps in the mobile phone app, which made the entire process so simpler and user friendly. Whether it’s early morning or midnight, I just had to open the app and complete the transaction.

Taxi-For-Sure

Clean vehicles, professional drivers, no nonsense driving, transparent billing – you will love the ride for sure. The driver taps the begin point of your ride in a small device, and when the journey is over – he taps it again to mark the end point, and the bill is ready in an instant. By the time he shows the bill, you also get a copy of it in your email. Not just that, a SMS also beeps asking for a feedback of the ride.

When I experienced this for the first time, it was like a dream. I live in Bangalore where a ride in autorickshaw not only is costly but also not safe. One of my trips with TFS was after a night show cinema – at around 1 am. It was easy, cozy and safe travel that costed just 200 rupees (courtesy APP50) for 10 km. I don’t think this is possible with even a very few kind-hearted autorickshaw drivers in the city.

Though this business model is a big hit among tech savvy youth in many Indian cities, it remains to be seen how this model is going to catch up with a larger audience – that directly call a fixed line for bookings. Of course, there is a fixed line open for booking in TFS but apparently it would face stiff competition in drawing customers in that segment. Oh!! you never know if TFS is doing extremely well in that too!!

Clearly, TFS has made a positive impact on the commuters across Indian cities, and I hope they continue their dream run. With their core business values, they can definitely revolutionize the industry. All the best TFS, keep going!! Provide us happy rides, and we will make sure we will only call TaxiForSure!!

Tulips all the way

I published a photo in 500px.com yesterday and was very happy to see lot of responses for the same.

I think Tulip did the magic. So far it has got more than 1000 views and around 50 likes. The photo was taken in Netherlands Keukenhof 3 years back – but it feels like it happened yesterday.

And yes, 500px provides an excellent platform for amateur and professional photographers to display their work. If you are a good photographer, then go ahead and open an account 500px.com right away.

Give your functional testers a break

PeopleSoft has lot of tools to work on – some of the very popular tools include Application Designer, Application Engine, Component Interface, etc.., When PeopleSoft releases a new tools version, generally it comes up with some new tools, and also provides updates/upgrades to their existing tools. Tools like Integration Broker, Upgrade Manager, XML publisher, etc.., are very handy, but somehow they are not so common to entry level technical consultants. I recently explored a new tool for functional testing which has been delivered by PeopleSoft from their tools version 8.51. This tool proves to be so easy to access, and entry level engineers will love playing with this tool.

This tool, named PeopleSoft Test Framework is slowly catching up for functional testing in PeopleSoft applications. It employs record and playback approach, and it is fun to watch the playback. When you record the test, it translates each of your activity into small steps, and these steps together make up a test. PTF has a test editor where you can modify the existing tests and clone them into new ones.

The idea behind the launch of this tool is to reduce the effort spent on functional testing. Since the tests you create in this tool are PeopleSoft managed objects, it is easy to move these to different development instances and just play it back. This is an interesting concept. As a functional tester, one can be relieved to get rid of mundane tasks to be done in each of the development instances – thanks to PTF tool. No need to maintain bulky excel sheets with boring templates. PTF generates the test logs for you and they can be viewed from PTF client along with the screenshots. If you are so techie, you can go ahead and create dashboard reports out of these test case results.

This tool can also be used for regression testing. This means, you can create a test today, and use the same script may be after couple of years when you do an application upgrade to see if your old functionalities are still intact. Organizations that have implemented PeopleSoft can very well utilise this tool for their testing needs. In the long run, they can very well realise that the testing costs have drastically reduced.

If your organization has implemented PeopleSoft, it’s high time they tried PTF.

Leave your comments on what do you think about this tool from PeopleSoft. If you are already using this, you can also explain what kind of value addition this tool brings to you and your team.
